Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame
Roy Miller
Our 2022 Ripley County Basketball Hall of Fame Meritorious Award winner is Mr. Roy Miller, Holton, Class of 1951.
Roy's longtime dedication to basketball in Ripley County began at a young age, which included playing the game throughout his childhood and into his high school years, playing for the Warhorses for 4 years which included a pair of sectional runner-up finishes in 1948 and 1951.
Following his graduation from the school, Roy enlisted in the United States Army, serving our country in Korea before returning home to help his father with the family farm. It was then when his lasting impression on the game of basketball in the area was made.
Mr. Miller became a fixture at the Ripley County Tournament, serving many years as the official timer for the tournament and attending as a fan while also serving as a junior high coach at Holton. In addition, there never seemed to be a game in the area, tournament or regular season, that Roy did not attend as a fan. While primarily supportive of youth in the Holton area and at South Ripley, Roy's support has blanketed student-athletes of the hardwood from all around Southeastern Indiana. Since his return from the Army, Mr. Miller had spent over well over 50 years with perfect attendance in the stands, having never missed a county tourney or local sectional game. Several fans here in attendance tonight have sat alongside Roy at many of those contests.
Roy Miller defines what it means to be a true basketball fan in Ripley County. His service and enthusiasm towards the game have been exemplary and his love for the area goes unmatched. We are forever grateful for his lifelong passion to hoops and it is our honor to see him take his place among many of the same coaches and players he has cheered for and supported these many years.
